St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy did not start in the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 23, because the team wanted to see what RB Benny Cunningham would do with the first-team offense, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. Fisher said the team knows what Stacy can do with the starting offense.

Huddle Up: Cunningham, a 2013 undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee, had 5 carries for 32 yards in the contest to continue his solid preseason (15-80, TD) and he looks to have the edge over third-round pick Tre Mason (37-110) for the No. 2 job behind Stacy.

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason (hamstring) is questionable for Week 1. 'Tre's doing good,' head coach Jeff Fisher said. 'He had two treatment sessions today, and he's doing well. So we'll see how he is during the week.' RB Benny Cunningham is expected to have a larger role whether Mason plays or not.

Huddle Up: It's not looking great for Mason in Week 1. Even if he does play, he'll be limited against a tough Seattle defense. Benny Cunningham is set for an expanded role but again, it's not an attractive matchup.

With St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason (hamstring) likely to be a game-time decision in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, RB Benny Cunningham could have a much bigger role in the opener game.

Huddle Up: While Mason and rookie first-round pick Todd Gurley, who already has been ruled out of the opener, have attracted all the fantasy attention, Cunningham is in position to be the opening-game starter and should be high on the radar for those who are in need of RB help. Cunningham had 598 total yards and four TDs backing up Mason a year ago.

St. Louis Rams RB Benny Cunningham has been the team's best running back during the preseason and could push RB Zac Stacy for playing time this season.
SOURCE: Not available
Huddle Up: In fantasy drafts held over the last 2 weeks, Stacy is the 14th RB coming off the board, while Cunningham is way down at 71, but the gap is getting narrower by the day, especially after the latter got the surprise start in Game 3 of the preseason. Definitely swoop up Cunningham if you're down to the RB handcuff/flier stage in your draft.

St. Louis Rams RB Benny Cunningham will continue to be the third-down back in 2015 with Tre Mason starting and Zac Stacy likely serving as the backup.

Huddle Up: Cunningham reeled in 45 passes to finish third on the team and seventh among all league RBs last season, and his designated role most certainly cuts into Mason's fantasy value, particularly in PPR leagues.
