The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports the Saints are close to signing unrestricted free-agent TE Dan Campbell.

The Oakland Press reports the Detroit Lions have informed TE Dan Campbell that he will be released Monday, Feb. 9, according to his agent.

Campbell has been lost for the rest of the season with a severely sprained right foot. He will be placed on injured reserve as soon as a replacement is found.

Campbell may be pushing his way into the starter role with the Cowboys. The 6-5, 263-pound TE aquired from the Giants fits well into coach Bill Parcell's style of play. Parcell has produced Pro-Bowl tight ends in the past (Ben Coates and Mark Bavaro), so he knows how to use the position.

Huddle Up: Campbell's main competition for the starting job is 10 year veteran Tony McGee, who's production has been on the decline since 1997. Campbell has a good shot and may be tight end worth taking as your fantasy backup.
