Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz likely will be released this offseason because the team can create around $26 million in salary cap space if he is cut.
Huddle Up: Wentz probably will have a hard time finding a starting job this offseason after his last two seasons, but fantasy players can monitor the situation. He would be a low-end No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he starts for a team.

Washington Commanders QB Sam Howell will likely be the starting quarterback for 2023, the team is telling offensive coordinator candidates, per sources on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Huddle Up: Howell appeared in just one game in his rookie season and was pretty decent, completing 11-of-19 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown to one pick, while also adding five carries for 35 yards in Week 18. The 2022 fifth-round pick might have a fairly clear path to starting work in 2023, as Taylor Heinicke is a free agent and Carson Wentz will almost certainly be cut. Howell is an intriguing fantasy prospect with his added ability to run and should be rostered in dynasty formats.

Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson (foot) said he will be sidelined for about three months because of his foot surgery.
Huddle Up: Gibson will miss some of offseason workouts because of the surgery but should be fine for training camp. He probably will be part of a committee at running back next season but can still be a No. 3 running back in fantasy leagues.

Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson (foot) underwent surgery to repair a fracture Thursday, Jan. 5. There is hope he will be ready for offseason workouts.
Huddle Up: Gibson is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will be looking to earn a new deal either in Washington or elsewhere. He's a hold in dynasty and can be viewed as an RB3.

Washington Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. (thigh) did not practice Friday, Jan. 6, and was ruled out for the Week 18 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
Huddle Up: Robinson will end his rookie season with an injury and will be looking to take a hold of the starting role in 2023.

Washington Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Jan. 5.
Huddle Up: After surprisingly missing Wednesday's practice and failing to take part in Thursday's session, it appears unlikely Robinson will suit up in the season finale against the Dallas Cowboys. If that is the case, Jonathan Williams appears to be in line for a featured role - especially with Thursday's announcement that Antonio Gibson (knee) is headed to IR. Williams would be no better than a volume-based RB2 if that ends up being the case.

Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson (foot/knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Thursday, Jan. 5.
Huddle Up: Gibson will finish the 2022 season with an injury and likely will be viewed as an RB3/4 type assuming the Commanders don't add more to the backfield in 2023.

Washington Commanders QB Sam Howell will get the start in Week 18, head coach Ron Rivera said on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
Huddle Up: With the Commanders being eliminated from playoff contention, the team will be taking a look at the rookie and 2022 fifth-round pick, who has yet to take a snap. Howell obviously shouldn't be in lineups in Week 18; however, he should be rostered in dynasty formats.

Washington Commanders QB Sam Howell will play in Week 18. It's not known if he'll start or he'll spell Taylor Heinicke in the game.
Huddle Up: The fifth-rounder is worth stashing/monitoring in dynasty formats if he's still out there. He showed some flashes in preseason but offers no fantasy luster as far as lineups go.

Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson (foot, knee) did not practice all week and was ruled out for Week 17 on Friday, Dec. 30.
Huddle Up: Gibson was a shaky start for those fantasy owners rolling the dice on him this week, but the decision has just been made for them. Now, Brian Robinson will be in for an even bigger workload, making him an RB2. Jonathan Williams will also get involved, but not enough to warrant starting consideration.

Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson (foot/knee) was ruled out Friday, Dec. 30, ahead of the Week 17 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.
Huddle Up: Gibson failed to practice all week so this isn't a surprise. Brian Robinson should be in line for a big workload in a favorable matchup, giving him an RB2 floor.

Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 29.
Huddle Up: Gibson seems to be trending in the wrong direction to play so managers will need to make sure they have a pivot option ready.

Washington Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. (quadriceps) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Dec. 28.
Huddle Up: Robinson will continue to see a majority of the work in the running game and may see even more work if Antonio Gibson is unavailable. He has been playing well and can be a No. 2 running back or flex option in fantasy leagues.

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz was named the starter for Week 17 with QB Taylor Heinicke going to the bench.
Huddle Up: Wentz offers very little in terms of fantasy and is just a depth piece in two-QB leagues.

Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson (undisclosed) is dealing with a sprain to an undisclosed body part, according to head coach Ron Rivera.
Huddle Up: Rivera didn't bother to go into details, so fantasy managers will likely have to wait for the team's first practice report on Wednesday to get a sense of what Gibson might be dealing with ahead of the team's Week 17 game with the Cleveland Browns. If Gibson is somehow sidelined for that game, Brian Robinson Jr. could handle in upwards of 25 touches against a weak run defense and would have RB1 upside.

Washington Commanders QBs Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke both displayed "positives" in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers, leaving the team in a position where it has yet to decide which one will start in Week 17 versus the Cleveland Browns. Rivera told reporters that he expects to announce the starter Wednesday, Dec. 28.
Huddle Up: It seems as though Rivera has been waiting for an opportunity to go back to Wentz in recent weeks, especially in light of the team's current three-game winless streak (0-2-1). Heinicke has proven to be a capable starting quarterback in the league - albeit with limited upside - while Wentz's aggressiveness tends to lead to more volatility. Expect Wentz to get the nod as the Commanders continue to fight for their playoff lives with two weeks left to go in the regular season.

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz replaced QB Taylor Heinicke in Week 16, but after the game, head coach Ron Rivera said a decision hasn't been made on which quarterback will start going forward. "It's not going to be a knee-jerk," Rivera said. "It's going to be something, at the end of the day, I really do believe gives us the best chance to win football games, get into the playoffs and see what happens."
Huddle Up: Regardless of who ends up under center for Washington in Week 17, fantasy owners should look elsewhere for help at the quarterback position.

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz completed 12-of-16 passes for 123 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in a relief appearance in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Huddle Up: It's uncertain if the switch to Wentz is going to be something which carries into Week 17, but Taylor Heinicke turned it over twice with a pick and fumble lost, so head coach Ron Rivera might have seen enough. Whomever starts for Washington is only worth a look as a low-end QB2 in most fantasy leagues, especially at this critical juncture of the season.

Washington Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. (quadriceps) practiced in full all week and was removed from the injury report for Week 16 on Thursday, Dec. 22.
Huddle Up: Robinson has taken full control of Washington's backfield and has even been getting looks in the passing game. He remains a high-end flex play but could move into RB2 territory if he can find the end zone more.

Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson (foot) was a full participant in practice on Thursday, Dec. 22, and was removed from the injury report for Week 16.
Huddle Up: Gibson has fully taken a backseat to Brian Robinson, who is even getting involved in the passing game now. Gibson has seen enough volume to keep him somewhat relevant, but he's a touchdown-dependent flex for Week 16.

Washington Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. (quadriceps) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Dec. 21.
Huddle Up: Robinson probably will receive most of the work in the running game and could see a few targets in the passing game. He can be considered a No. 2 back or flex option in fantasy leagues.

Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson (foot) was limited during practice Wednesday, Dec. 21.
Huddle Up: Gibson has been on the injury report for multiple weeks but has been able to play and should be on the field for Week 16. He should see a decent amount of touches and can be a flex option in most leagues.

Washington Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. (quadriceps) practiced in full on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
Huddle Up: Robinson turned in limited practices to start last week, so a full practice to begin this one means he should be fine for Week 16. Robinson has looked good over the last three weeks and has fully taken control of the backfield, even seeing some passing-game work. However, his lack of touchdowns (he was robbed of one in Week 15) has limited his ceiling a bit. Regardless, Robinson remains a high-end flex play.
