Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR John Metchie (illness) was placed on the Non-Football Illness list on Sunday, July 24. Metchie announced earlier in the day he had been diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. The rookie is expected to miss the 2022 season.

Houston Texans WR John Metchie was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia and is expected to miss the entire 2022 season, the rookie said in a statement Sunday, July 24. "I am currently receiving great medical care, am in good spirits and I expect to make a recovery at a later point in time. I will likely not be playing football this season. My main focus will be on my health and recovery," said Metchie.

Huddle Up: First and foremost, we hope for a speedy and healthy recovery for Metchie. The second-round pick was expected to have a sizeable role in the offense behind Brandin Cooks. With Metchie's expected absence, second-year WR Nico Collins should have a more solidified role as the team's WR2 while Phillip Dorsett, Chris Conley, and Jalen Camp are likely the front runners for the WR3 role. None of those three have much fantasy appeal at this point.

Houston Texans WR John Metchie (knee) can "create his own yards" after the catch and "has good short-area quickness," according to offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. "He can create his own yards once he gets the ball in his hands. He has good short-area quickness, which will allow him to beat man coverage, and that's what you got to do in the National Football League," Hamilton told the team's website.

Huddle Up: While Alabama teammate Jameson Williams has grabbed most of the headlines since the college season ended, Metchie was more of the go-to guy in the Crimson Tide's offense in 2021. He is everything Hamilton says, but his Year 1 ceiling figures to be capped by the fact he is still rehabbing a torn ACL and stuck in an offense that already needs to feed Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins. Metchie should have no problem establishing himself as the primary slot option once healthy, however.

Huddle Up: Metchie is working his way back from an ACL tear, but he should provide some explosive plays once he is back to full speed. He is a late-round lottery ticket in redraft leagues, but Metchie is a high-upside option who is worth grabbing in the second round of rookie drafts.

Houston Texans WR John Metchie (knee) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery.

Huddle Up: There isn't a lot of competition in Houston's receiving corps outside of Brandin Cooks, so Metchie should see solid playing as soon as he is up to speed. He is worth a late-round flier in redraft leagues, and he is a second-round prospect in rookie drafts.

Houston Texans WR John Metchie is getting high praise from fellow WR Brandin Cooks. "That kid's special," Cooks said. "You can just tell it. You know when you talk with someone, you just get that feel about a guy; the way that he goes about his business."

Huddle Up: Metchie (knee), who isn't certain to be ready for the start of the season as he continues to rehab a torn ACL, could have a fairly large role in his first season alongside Cooks and Niko Collins if healthy. Metchie is a late-round pick in dynasty drafts and a bench stash at best until he produces.

Houston Texans second-round draft choice WR John Metchie agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Texans Friday, May 13, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Huddle Up: Metchie is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament but appears to have a good chance to be ready for the start of the 2022 season. He probably will be a top-three receiver for the Texans as a rookie and can be a late round pick in fantasy drafts.

Houston Texans second-round draft choice John Metchie (Alabama) is expected to return from his torn anterior cruciate ligament at some point during the 2022 season, but head coach Lovie Smith admitted Friday, May 13, that the team is still ''in the process'' of finding out where he is in his recovery. Smith noted the Texans expect to have a better idea about Metchie's recovery in a couple of weeks.

Huddle Up: The relative pessimism surrounding Metchie's recovery is a bit surprising for multiple reasons, one of which has to do with former college teammate Jameson Williams, who suffered the same injury a month later than Metchie and is reportedly on track for the season opener. When Metchie is fully healthy, he figures to see playing time immediately in the slot while Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins live on the perimeter.
