Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer reportedly is up to 265 pounds - 16 pounds more than he weighed at the 2023 NFL Combine - and the team believes he has made some "significant strides" as a blocker, according to Tashan Reed of The Athletic.
Huddle Up: Reed seems to believe that if rookie Brock Bowers does not develop quickly as a blocker, then Mayer could see more snaps this season. With that said, it would be utterly shocking if the Raiders do not utilize 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends and two receivers) at one of the highest levels in the league in 2024 so both players see the field a lot. Bowers should still pace the position group in fantasy production this season, but the gap may not be as wide as most might expect.

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer could see more snaps this season than rookie first-round TE Brock Bowers, in the opinion of The Athletic's Tashan Reed, who notes that Mayer (6-foot-4, 265 pounds) is bigger than Bowers (6-foot-3, 243 pounds) and made considerable strides as a blocker during his rookie year, which is an area Bowers is not considered strong. Raiders tight ends coach Luke Steckel said earlier this offseason that "tight ends are blockers first," which may lead to more playing time for Mayer under run-first offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.
Huddle Up: For fantasy owners, Bowers absolutely carries more value than Mayer. That being said, the NFL is full of examples of players being highly drafted and still needing time to acclimate. And it's not always a matter of talent, either, just ask any Kyle Pitts owner. While both guys figure to see a lot of work, the thought that Bowers could be limited by his shortcomings as a blocker is concerning. He's a risk as a TE1; you just have to decide whether you want to be the one to take that risk because someone probably will in most drafts.

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer has dropped 10 pounds this offseason in order to help him improve his speed, according to The Athletic's Tashan Reed.
Huddle Up: Mayer will be sharing playing time with Brock Bowers this upcoming season and probably will see a few targets each game. He probably will be considered a No. 2 tight end in most fantasy leagues.

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer (toe) said he is completely recovered from the toe injury that sidelined him for the final three games of last season.
Huddle Up: Mayer was having a lackluster rookie campaign even before the injury, and with the addition of Brock Bowers in the draft, it is hard to see Mayer making much of a jump in production in his second season.

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer (toe) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Jan. 6.
Huddle Up: Mayer will end his rookie season on the reserve list and should be in line to grab a starting role in 2024. Austin Hooper will replace Mayer in Week 18, but he can be avoided in almost all leagues.

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer (toe) did not participate in practice Friday, Jan. 5, and has been ruled out for Week 18.
Huddle Up: Austin Hooper likely will be the starting tight end with Mayer unavailable but can be avoided in fantasy leagues even though he should see a few targets during the game.

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer (toe) did not participate in practice Thursday, Jan. 4.
Huddle Up: Mayer appears to be in danger of missing another game, but fantasy players will know more about his status in the next day or two. Fantasy players should look for other options to use in their lineups even if Mayer is active for the game.

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer (toe) is unlikely to play against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 17, according to the team Friday, Dec. 29.
Huddle Up: Mayer has been dealing with a toe injury for a few weeks now. Managers will want to check the injury report just to be sure, but a pivot option is likely to be needed.
