Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold could be a candidate for the franchise tag if the two sides are not able to work out an agreement before the tag deadline, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Huddle Up: The Vikings will have a decision to make since Darnold had a breakout season in 2024, but they also have J.J. McCarthy coming back from injury. Darnold likely will be the starter for a team next season but probably will be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback no matter where he signs.

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold could be a target for the Las Vegas Raiders during free agency, in the opinion of ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Huddle Up: Darnold is coming off the best season of his career and should receive interest from multiple teams if the Vikings do not place the franchise tag on him. The Raider do not have a clear answer at quarterback at this time, and Darnold could be their long-term starter if they can reach an agreement. He probably will be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he plays for the Raiders.

The Tennessee Titans have so many holes in the roster the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft could be available for trade, according to sources. Tennessee's brass appears open to giving QB Will Levis another shot or adding a quarterback via free agency, with names like Sam Darnold (Vikings) and Justin Fields (Steelers) on the team's radar in March's free agency. ESPN's Dan Graziano speculates the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Jets all being potential suitors for the No. 1 pick.

Minnesota Viking impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold has "earned the right to be a free agent," although head coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters recently that the team will "continue to have ongoing dialogue and discussions" with him.
Huddle Up: At this point, it appears the Vikings are comfortable with allowing Darnold to test the market and prepping 2024 rookie J.J. McCarthy to be the starter. Darnold is going to have a market in free agency with so many quarterback-needy teams and the draft class not particularly deep at the position. The Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders appear to be among the favorites for his services.

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold ranked second in the NFL with 1,474 yards on play action passes during the 2024 season.
Huddle Up: Darnold had an outstanding regular season and will be one of the top players available in free agency this offseason. He will be starting for a team in 2025 but may only be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback depending on the situation.

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold averaged 2.6 seconds in pocket time during the 2024 season, according to Pro Football Reference.
Huddle Up: That mark was tied with Deshaun Watson and Mason Rudolph for the second-longest average time in the pocket behind Jalen Hurts (2.7). On the plus side, the mark was his lowest since 2021 with the Carolina Panthers. Darnold was able to flourish this season in part because the Vikings had the supporting cast to make it happen. Assuming Darnold leaves in free agency, it will be critical that he finds a team with at least one alpha receiver who is committed to protecting him. If that happens, he will have a decent shot of enjoying a strong encore to what was a career season in 2024.

The Minnesota Vikings suffered a loss in the NFC wild-card game against the Los Angeles Rams in a game moved to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. due to the terrible Southern California wildfires situation. QB Sam Darnold had a disastrous game, completing 25-of-40 passes for 245 yards, one touchdown and one interception with 19 rushing yards and a lost fumble, while RB Aaron Jones ended up with 13 rushes for 48 yards and 12 receiving yards on six targets. RB Cam Akers chipped in with 39 rushing yards, while WR T.J. Hockenson had five grabs for a game-high 64 yards and a touchdown. WRs Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson each had team-highs with eight targets, with Jefferson posting five catches and 58 yards, while Addison had three grabs for 29 yards. TE Johnny Mundt had two catches for 28 yards, too. LB Blake Cashman led the way on defense with 11 total stops, five solo tackles, a sack and a QB hit, while LB Ivan Pace Jr. had a game-high seven solo tackles with 10 total stops and two tackles for loss.

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold (quadriceps) was a full participant in practice for the third straight day on Saturday, Jan. 11, and was removed from the injury report.
Huddle Up: Darnold was one of the better options at quarterback in the regular season, but he appeared to crack under the pressure in Week 18. That remains a concern in another big-pressure situation, but the Los Angeles Rams are a very giving defense to quarterbacks, which makes Darnold a viable DFS option this week.
