Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks QB Sam Darnold's three-year contract can be voided after the 2025 season with only $37.5 million in guarantees, according to a source.

Free-agent QB Sam Darnold (Vikings) officially signed a three-year contract worth a reported $100.5 million with the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday, March 13.

Free-agent QB Sam Darnold (Vikings) agreed to a three-year deal worth $100.5 million, according to sources Monday, March 10. The deal includes $55 million guaranteed.
Huddle Up: Darnold is coming off the best season of his career and will be the replacement for Geno Smith. The departure of DK Metcalf means one less wide receiver to work with, but this should provide a stable floor for Jaxon Smith-Njigba. As for Darnold's fantasy prospects, it will be difficult to follow up his QB8 finish in Seattle. He's best viewed as a QB2 option moving forward.

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold is expected to receive interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers when free agency starts, according to sources.
Huddle Up: Darnold likely will receive interest from multiple teams, so it is not surprising that the Steelers will pursue him since they need a starting quarterback. He played very well last season but would be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he joins Pittsburgh.

The Minnesota Vikings are exploring alternate options for acquiring a veteran quarterback, since it now appears unlikely that QB Sam Darnold will return to the club for the 2025 season, according to multiple sources. One such possibility is re-signing impending free-agent QB Daniel Jones, who is also receiving interest from other NFL teams.
Huddle Up: The Vikings are likely to give QB J.J. McCarthy every opportunity to win the team's starting quarterback job, after he missed his entire rookie season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee. As a result, any veteran quarterback that Minnesota brings in this offseason would probably be considered an underdog if there is a battle for the job during training camp.

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold now appears unlikely to return to the club for a second season, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Huddle Up: Earlier this week, the Seahawks dealt QB Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, creating a starting quarterback vacancy in the Emerald City. Darnold could be a good fit for the team, since he has worked with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak in the past. However, Seattle could wind up without their top two receivers from last season in 2025, which would likely make Darnold a QB2 option in fantasy circles if he signs with the Seahawks.

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold is expected to receive interest from the Seattle Seahawks during free agency.
Huddle Up: Darnold has worked with Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak in the past so that may be a selling point for Darnold. The Seahawks may be without two of their top receivers next season, which probably will make Darnold a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he joins Seattle.

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold has reportedly been in discussions with the team about agreeing to a short-term contract before the start of free agency, according to sources. Per those sources, there is mutual interest to "keep this relationship going."
Huddle Up: This is not exactly new information, as the word out in Minnesota for some time has been about the Vikings hoping to keep Darnold around. The reason this report is newsworthy is because it reinforces the notion that both sides are actively trying to get something done before the start of free agency. The incentive for Minnesota is to keep a capable starting quarterback around and the incentive for Darnold is to continue playing with one of the best supporting casts in the league.

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold will not receive the franchise tag before the 4 PM EST deadline on March 4 and is set to become an unrestricted free agent, according to sources.
Huddle Up: Per earlier reports, the Vikings and Darnold will continue to negotiate, but it appears likely Darnold will have no shortage of suitors and is unlikely to return to Minnesota. The most obvious and/or realistic fits for Darnold are the Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders, but the Raiders are reportedly not all that interested. Either way, Darnold will likely command at least $40 million/season when he decides to sign. This development is also great news for J.J. McCarthy, who should enter the 2025 season as the unquestioned starter as long as Darnold does not return on a team-friendly deal.

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold is not expected to receive the franchise tag before the league's March 4 deadline for such designations, according to sources. However, both sides are reportedly "working through options" to potentially keep him in Minnesota.
Huddle Up: Rapoport suggests that Darnold's current situation is "fluid," so the tide of this story could turn over the next 12-18 hours. It seems reasonable to believe the Vikings are leaning toward Darnold walk so they can try to maximize J.J. McCarthy's rookie-contract window over the next three seasons, but it also makes sense that Minnesota could tag Darnold and try to accumulate Day 2 draft pick compensation from a quarterback-needy team. We will know for sure which way the Vikings will go soon.
