Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) is expected to retire from the NFL due to the neck injury he suffered last season, according to sources. According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, Seattle will officially release him with a failed physical designation.

Huddle Up: Carson is not expected to announce his retirement officially in the off chance his neck dramatically improves, but that seems unlikely to happen. It is a sad end for the former seventh-round pick who was once told in college that he ran too soft but emerged as one of the league's most punishing runners. The Seahawks are doing right by him, however, as the Collective Bargaining Agreement allows players with a failed physical designation to receive several million dollars in injury protection benefits.

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) is committed to continuing to rehab from his offseason neck surgery but has not been given a timeline to return to football activities, according to Heavy.com's Jonathan Adams. "I see myself playing until I feel like stopping. My mindset is never to give up. So, I'm staying positive like I said, and continue to fight and get back onto the field. ... Not trying to rush it, I'm just trying to take it one day at a time. Just keep rehabbing, keep getting better. Keep building strength and then go from there. But like I said, there's no timeline for me," Carson said.

Huddle Up: It would not be a good idea to bet against Carson, but the odds of him returning to form this season - if not his career - after this kind of injury and surgery (neck fusion) are long. Fantasy managers interested in investing in the Seattle backfield should pick between Rashaad Penny and rookie Kenneth Walker - at least for this year. While Penny is the presumed starter, his injury history makes him a poor bet. Therefore, Walker may be the better short- and long-term play for fantasy purposes.

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) may receive an update on his neck injury at some point this week, according to head coach Pete Carroll.
SOURCE: Not available
Huddle Up: Carson's availability for 2022 is still uncertain at this point, so fantasy players will need to monitor the situation. He probably is no longer a main running back at this point in his career but would share playing time with Rashaad Penny is he is cleared to play. He could be a possible No. 3 running back in some leagues.

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) faces an uncertain future following neck surgery, which is one of several motivating factors that pushed the Seahawks to draft Kenneth Walker III in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. ''We don't have updates yet on Chris and we won't know for some time. ... So there's a little bit of uncertainty that we're waiting on. With the commitment that we have to the run game, we want that group of guys really (ready) to get this thing hit off from the get-go,'' head coach Pete Carroll recently told ESPN.com's Brady Henderson.

Huddle Up: Fantasy managers need to proceed as if Carson will not play anytime soon, if only because Seattle's investment in Walker suggests that is the case. Walker is "a rocket" according to Carroll and reportedly caught the ball well in rookie minicamp, so it sounds as though he is off to a good start. Rashaad Penny should be considered the frontrunner to start Week 1, but his own injury history makes it likely Walker will make his impact felt in fantasy at some point in 2022.

Seattle Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III was selected by the team in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft partly due to the uncertainty of Chris Carson's timeline to return from December neck surgery, according to head coach Pete Carroll. ''I would say this, we picked him because, on the board, he was up there for us and we couldn't pass him up. We don't have updates yet on Chris, we won't know for some time here. We can't predict that,'' said Carroll on Friday, April 29.

Huddle Up: As Carson still works his way back from neck surgery, his fantasy outlook is extremely clouded. The selection of Walker only casts more doubt into Carson's chances to provide fantasy value in 2022, and until we get more information, the latter will likely remain off draft boards. Walker has the chance to compete with Rashaad Penny for the starting role, but with the likelihood of a timeshare between the two, the fantasy ceilings for both players will be capped to the RB2 range.

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) is still very much a question mark for the 2022 season, and it remains unclear if he will be able to return to football after undergoing neck surgery late last season, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. 'We really don't have any real updates at this time. It's still gonna take some time still working through it. He's really working hard, I know that, and it's really important to take it as far as you can. So we'll just have to wait. Take some time to figure that out,' head coach Pete Carroll said.

Huddle Up: With each day and week that passes, it becomes more likely that Rashaad Penny will start the season as the featured back in Seattle's backfield. Dynasty managers of Carson have little choice but to sit tight and wait this thing out, but there is a possibility he will not play at all in 2022 and perhaps never again.

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a disc issue in his neck and should return to the field in late spring, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

Huddle Up: Carson will miss the rest of the season but should be ready to play in 2022. Alex Collins should receive most of the work at running back for the rest of the season and can be a No. 2 running back most weeks.

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) will undergo season-ending neck surgery soon, according to head coach Pete Carroll.
SOURCE: Not available
Huddle Up: Carson gave fantasy managers some hope a couple of weeks ago when he returned to practice for a couple of days, but his neck didn't respond the way he or the team had hoped. Carroll told reporters there is "every bit of confidence" Carson will be back in 2022, although fantasy managers can be forgiven if they let him slide a bit in drafts given his injury history. Alex Collins, Travis Homer, Rashaad Penny, and DeeJay Dallas will finish out the season for Seattle. Only Collins has managed to maintain some fantasy value, and he will likely be stuck as a low-end flex in this slow-moving offense.

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) has not made 'the positive progress that [the team] wanted,' according to head coach Pete Carroll, who added that he'll take a few more days before saying anything more definitive about Carson's status.
SOURCE: Not available
Huddle Up: This time last week it looked possible that Carson would suit up in Lambeau. Now, it's sounding a lot like it did before Carson landed on IR initially. Seattle still has time to decide whether to activate Carson from IR, but his status for Week 11 is looking iffy. If he's out again, Alex Collins would remain the primary back.
