Free-agent PK Matt Prater (Lions) signed a two-year, $7 million base contract with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, March 17, according to a source.
Huddle Up: Arizona is an appealing destination for a kicker heading into the 2021 season with QB Kyler Murray and WRs DeAndre Hopkins and A.J. Green. Prater will be a starting option most weeks.

Detroit Lions PK Matt Prater kicked four field goals Sunday, Dec. 4, in a 28-13 win over the New Orleans Saints.
Huddle Up: Prater remains a safe bet for fantasy owners, who have come to see Prater rarely miss a field goal or extra point. In this day and age of kickers missing PATs, this is a good sign. If you need a strong kicker to close out your season or go to the playoffs, pick up Prater if he is available.

Detroit Lions PK Matt Prater (illness) is expected to play Thursday, Dec. 3, against the Green Bay Packers, according to a source.
Huddle Up: Prater is a sneaky fantasy grab and play for those of you who fear the impact of weather on kickers; he won't kick outdoors again until Week 17.

Updating previous reports, free-agent PK Matt Prater (Broncos) signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions.
Huddle Up: You knew Prater would find a home after the Broncos opted to keep Brandon McMurray. And you knew the Lions would be looking for a kicker after Alex Henery's inaccuracy cost them a win last week. It's another prolific offense for Prater and a great opportunity for fantasy points.

Free-agent PK Matt Prater agreed in principal to sign with the Detroit Lions Tuesday, Oct. 7, according to an NFL source.
Huddle Up: Prater, who last season connected on a league-best 96.2 percent of his FG attempts (25-of-26), wasn't going to stay a free agent for long, especially with the likes of the PK-needy Lions in the market. Detroit has seen Nate Freese and Alex Henery combine to hit only 4 of 12 attempts in the first 5 games and are hoping their third kicker of the season is the charm to putting kicking issues behind them.

Denver Broncos PK Matt Prater is being released before he comes off his four-game suspension following this Sunday's game, according to a source. PK Brandon McManus has won the team's kicking job.
Huddle Up: Somewhat of a surprise given Prater's stellar on-field track record but his off-field issues and high-$ salary apparently were too much to stomach -- especially for a kicker who would be facing at least a season-long suspension upon his next transgression. McManus has performed well, booming kickoffs and hitting all 3 of his field goals -- although none has been longer than 24 yards or has been an especially high-pressure kick. The Broncos' PK usually is high fantasy demand, but keep in mind that this is a team that doesn't kick a lot of FGs -- a league-low 3 this year and only 28 (21st in the league) since the start of last season.

NFL suspended Broncos K Matt Prater four games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. According to the Denver Post, the violation was "alcohol-related." Prater has been in the league's alcohol program since August 2011, when he was charged with DUI. The 4 game suspension was part of an agreement reached between Prater's attorney and the league, so an appeal is not expected. The NFL had initially threatened a one-year suspension.
Huddle Up: For those that still take kickers before the last round, you can scratch one of those worthy of that pick off your list. In fact, Prater may need to be dropped from your draft board all together. Prater's backup is undrafted rookie Mitch Ewald, but the Broncos will likely search for a veteran to pick up once teams make final cuts. Prater is eligible to return in Week 6, as the Broncos are on bye in Week 4.
