Free-agent TE Rob Gronkowski (Buccaneers) won't come out of retirement in 2022, but he is leaving the door open for a possible return in 2023 after speaking with multiple teams this season, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Sunday, Dec. 25.
Huddle Up: Gronkowski recently tweeted "I'm bored," which led to teams reaching out to him to gauge his interest. While a return won't happen this season, it appears Gronk isn't ruling out coming out of retirement in 2023, but chances are he'll end up wherever Tom Brady does. The future Hall of Famer will be 34 when next season begins, but he'll be fresh and will remain a fairly hot commodity in fantasy after the disaster that was the tight end position in 2022.

Retired TE Rob Gronkowski contacted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers about a possible return to the team in November. "It was more of a conversation than anything else. Usually, when you have to think about playing, you probably don't want to play. When it's just a discussion, I didn't think much of it at the time," Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said.
Huddle Up: Gronkowski reportedly told the team he had been working out and the two sides discussed multiple options, including the possibility of having him join the practice squad for a couple of weeks to get into football shape. As we know by now, Gronkowski decided to remain retired for now. The possibility of Gronk returning will likely always be out there for as long as his good friend Tom Brady keeps playing, but time is also running out on the 33-year-old to continue his playing career.

Retired TE Rob Gronkowski once again stated his desire to remain retired in an interview with "Good Morning America" published on Wednesday, July 20. "I won't go back to football," Gronkowski said. "I'm all set." Gronk's girlfriend and agent recently stated they thought he would come out of retirement to play again, but Gronkowski clearly disagrees.

Retired TE Rob Gronkowski's girlfriend, Camille Kostek, believes he will play again. "I am a honest lady, and honestly, I don't feel like this one is the forever one," Kostek. "So, I think maybe he'll come back again. I feel like him and Tom are just having fun, like, 'retired, not retired, retired, not retired."

Retired TE Rob Gronkowski (Buccaneers) told ESPN.com's Mike Reiss that he is "done with football" and will remain retired even if Tom Brady tries to convince him otherwise.

Huddle Up: It is almost a given this will not end speculation regarding a potential return, nor will it likely stop Brady from trying to reach out. However, Gronkowski does appear committed to getting his start in the business world now. As it currently stands, rookie Cade Otton and Cameron Brate will likely absorb most of the snaps Gronkowski leaves behind in Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans believes retired TE Rob Gronkowski will stay retired. "I feel like he's done," Evans said. "He takes a pretty big beating; I've seen his body after some of them games and I understand why [he would retire]."

Retired TE Rob Gronkowski's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, says he wouldn't be surprised if the tight end came out of retirement, either in 2022 or 2023. "It would not surprise me if Tom Brady calls him during the season to come back and Rob answers the call," Rosenhaus said. "This is just my opinion but I wouldn't be surprised if Rob comes back during the season or next season."

Huddle Up: If it is in fact the end for Gronkowski, he retires as one of the best to ever play his position. Gronk finishes his career ranked eighth all-time among tight ends with 621 catches, fifth with 9,286 receiving yards and third with 92 receiving touchdowns. Perhaps one of his most impressive feats is that he scored those 92 TDs in 143 games, while all-time leader Antonio Gates needed 236 games to get to 116. Gronkowski is a lock for the Hall of Fame five years from now.

Free-agent TE Rob Gronkowski (Buccaneers) might have hinted at retirement in a response to a social media post from Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Leonard Fournette on Sunday, May 15. ''I wonder how many 7 jerseys I'm going to see in the stands this year,'' Fournette posted, to which Gronk replied, ''I'll represent a 7 jersey in the stands for ya!''

Huddle Up: Gronk might just be having fun here, but his reply is still worth noting. The last we heard, Gronk is undecided about his future, but if he does return it'll be with the Bucs and as a borderline TE1.
