Detroit Lions QB Hendon Hooker won the backup quarterback competition when the team cut QB Nate Sudfeld on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
Huddle Up: While Hooker is still on the bench, his beating out Nate Sudfeld is a great sign for his development in what is essentially his rookie season after he spent most of last year recovering from a torn ACL. The second-year signal-flashed his arm and lethal rushing ability during the preseason, the latter of which gives him a lot of upside if he sees the field. Hooker's stock in dynasty formats gets a boost but he's still a Jared Goff injury away from seeing the field, so he isn't worth rostering in redraft leagues.

Detroit Lions QB Hendon Hooker "might be in some trouble" in the backup quarterback battle against QB Nate Sudfeld after the latter significantly outperformed the former in practice on Saturday, July 27, AtoZ Sports' Mike Payton wrote.
Huddle Up: While certainly not ideal, Hooker is basically a rookie in his second season after not seeing the field at all in 2023, so his struggles aren't entirely shocking. He should be held in dynasty formats for now but is highly unlikely to have any value in re-draft leagues.

Detroit Lions QB Hendon Hooker had a solid showing at organized team activities on Thursday, May 23, with one of his deep balls creating buzz among teammates.
Huddle Up: Hooker is now a full year removed from a torn ACL that he suffered during his final collegiate season, but Jared Goff is a major roadblock to Hooker getting the starting job after he received an extension recently. Hooker will only see the field if Goff gets hurt, although Detroit may look to trade him if he can build up his stock during the preseason. Hooker isn't worth targeting in season-long leagues but remains someone to hold in dynasty.
