Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) won't play in the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 15, according to head coach Andy Reid.
Huddle Up: No surprise here, and Mahomes may not play much - if at all - in the preseason. He looks like he'll be ready for Week 1, though, and his ADP is at 106. He'll be a midrange QB1.

Huddle Up: Mahomes seems to be on track to play in the regular season opener, but fantasy players should keep an eye on his status for the rest of the preseason. He is no longer a must-start option in fantasy leagues but can be a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 quarterback in leagues.

Huddle Up: Mahomes is expected to practice during training camp and is on track to play in Week 1 as long as there are no setbacks. He has seen a drop in his stats over the last few years but can still be a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) has clearance to practice "fully," according to head coach Andy Reid.
Huddle Up: With Mahomes getting clearance to practice in late July, he can start to be targeted, with some caution, in drafts. It seems he will be poised to start the season for the Chiefs, barring any setbacks in camp.

Huddle Up: Mahomes' timeline will have more of a solid shape to it once we get closer to the season. Fantasy players can draft Mahomes late in drafts while he remains a value, but will need a backup plan in case he misses time at the start of the season.

Huddle Up: Mahomes is recovering from a torn left ACL sustained in a December 2025 game against the Los Angeles Chargers and appears to be trending towards being able to play in the team's season opener versus the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14. However, the Chiefs could bring him along slowly as they look to establish the run more, following the team's offseason signing of former Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III. Mahomes is still worthy of consideration as a starting option in two-quarterback fantasy leagues or deeper one-quarterback leagues, but should not be selected as soon as he was in previous years' drafts unless we have a concrete timeline for his return.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) and the team are "both leaning into this Week 1 possibility" for Mahomes' return, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.
Huddle Up: Although the Chiefs are at least open to the idea of Mahomes playing in the season opener, he still isn't a lock to be under center in Week 1. Even if he is ready, it is unreasonable to expect Mahomes to be in top form so soon after knee surgery. Regardless of his health status, Mahomes is best viewed as a a high-upside QB2.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Chiefs Wednesday, June 10, and is now scheduled to be under contract until the 2033 season and is set to make $504.75 million during that span, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
