Detroit Lions WR Maurice Alexander, LB Abraham Beauplan, DL Mathieu Betts, OG Jake Burton, WR Jalon Calhoun, OL Duke Clemens, C Kingsley Eguakun, QB Jake Fromm, RB Jake Funk, S Chelen Garnes, CB Steven Gilmore, RB Jermar Jefferson, TE James Mitchell, DL Chris Smith and DL Isaac Ukwu were waived Tuesday, Aug. 27. The team also released CB Essang Bassey, WR Daurice Fountain, CB Javelin Guidry, LB Joel Iyiegbuniwe, T Jamarco Jones, WR Tom Kennedy, TE Sean McKeon, S C.J. Moore, DL Patrick O'Connor, DL Kyle Peko and LB Ty Summers. DE David Bada (undisclosed) was waived/injured, OG Christian Mahogany (illness) was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness list and DE Brodric Martin (undisclosed) and CB Emmanuel Moseley (pectoral) were placed on the Reserve/Injured list. Martin and Moseley have been designated to return later in the season.

Free-agent QB Jake Fromm (Commanders) and LB Ty Summers (Jaguars) signed with the Detroit Lions Monday, Aug. 12. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also released OG Ike Boettger and waived/injured WR Antoine Green (concussion).

Washington Commanders QB Sam Howell will start Week 17's game versus the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source. QB Jake Fromm will serve as the second-string quarterback, while QB Jacoby Brissett (hamstring) will be inactive as the team's third quarterback.
Huddle Up: The Commanders did not want to make an official decision on their starting quarterback for this afternoon until after Brissett had participated in pregame warmups Sunday, Dec. 31, although there wasn't much doubt that Howell was going to receive the starting nod. Howell is not a recommended starting option in any fantasy format, given his recent poor play and the tough matchup against the 49ers defense.
