San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance completed 16 of his 23 passes for 249 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and rushed eight times for 31 yards in a 23-7 win over the Houston Texans in Week 17.
Huddle Up: Lance attempted just 23 passes, but he was able to deliver some big plays, and he showed a little of his rushing potential. If he starts again in Week 18, he will be QB2 with upside.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance is expected to start Week 17's game against the Houston Texans.
Huddle Up: Lance will likely receive the starting nod because QB Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb) has not practiced all week and is listed as doubtful on the injury report. Lance can be viewed as a QB2 option in fantasy leagues due to the favorable matchup, assuming that Garoppolo is held out of action.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance has improved with his decision making and accuracy in practice while running the scout team, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. 'This last month of Trey has been his best consecutive four weeks at practice since we've had him,' Shanahan said. 'He's had a number of good days and he's had some bad days like most guys do, but as far as his consistency and stuff, I feel this last month has been his best.'
Huddle Up: Lance would be a QB2 option in fantasy if Jimmy Garoppolo is out.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance has logged a total of five snaps - all in Week 11 - since the team's Week 6 bye. Head coach Kyle Shanahan attempted to explain the lack of usage for the No. 3 overall pick on Tuesday, Nov. 30. 'It's more about me to tell you the truth. In terms of calling plays, We get into a rhythm of attacking a defense and what fronts they are playing and what coverages. Every play kind of plays off the next play and you get a feel, our players do and I, of what we are going to. What's been hard on me, that I didn't realize, is when you do bring in a different quarterback who gets a different set of plays, it's almost the first play I've been seeing of a new defense. You see what fronts and coverages they are doing but they are doing it completely to a plan as a threat of the runner at that position. I don't know what to anticipate with it, and then I got to stay in it for a while to get a feel for that. And then you go back and that feels kind of off for the last guy, so it kind of hurts my rhythm a little bit of understanding what a defense is getting. That's why personally as the year has gone I've gotten a little more away from it because I like to get a feel for what the defense is doing,' Shanahan said.
Huddle Up: As much as Shanahan deserves credit for being a sharp offensive mind, his logic here has a few holes. The 49ers' recent heavy reliance on the running game is a product of trying to minimize how much Jimmy Garoppolo needs to do, which is one reason why San Francisco drafted Lance in the first place. The second part is it has been well-established that quarterbacks with Lance's athleticism enhance running games, so he might actually be capping its upside by not playing Lance. And perhaps the oddest aspect of all of this is that Shanahan recently admitted Lance is the future, so every week he remains on the sidelines only delays his development. For now, Lance should remain rostered in superflex leagues, but that is about it.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance will serve as the team's backup quarterback for Week 8's game against the Chicago Bears, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Huddle Up: Lance was removed from the injury report after participating in a full practice session Friday, Oct. 28, on the heels of taking part in two limited sessions earlier in the week. He can be avoided in all fantasy leagues as long as he is not in a starting role.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance (knee) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 22, and has been ruled out for Week 7.
Huddle Up: Lance likely will return to the backup role when he returns to the lineup and can be avoided in all fantasy leagues for now.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 21.
Huddle Up: It seems like Lance will not be available for the Week 7 game, and it is not known when he will start again since Jimmy Garoppolo is close to returning. Lance can be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 20.
Huddle Up: It is not known if Lance would be the starting option if he was able to play because Jimmy Garoppolo is close to returning. Lance may take over the starting job at some point but can be avoided this week.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance (knee) did not participate in practice Monday, Oct. 18.
Huddle Up: There was some concern the bye week would not be enough for Lance to recover from his knee sprain, and that assessment appears to have been a correct one. The 49ers have resisted the temptation to rush his development so far - even as the offense has struggled in recent weeks - but the clock is ticking for San Francisco to turn over the keys of the offense to him. Jimmy Garoppolo figures to remain the starting quarterback for the next month or so - assuming he can stay healthy that long - but fantasy managers in deeper leagues should continue to stash Lance if possible.
