San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance was acquired by the Dallas Cowboys Friday, Aug. 25, in exchange for a fourth-round draft choice, according to sources.
Huddle Up: Lance will receive a fresh start with Dallas, but Dak Prescott will continue to be the starting quarterback because the team will have a lot of dead money if they decide to move on from him. Lance will not have fantasy value in the foreseeable future unless Prescott suffers an injury.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance is being shopped after QB Sam Darnold was named backup quarterback. He's due $5 million fully guaranteed next season.
Huddle Up: Lance being dealt would open up the possibility of him having some QB2 value in deeper leagues, and his dynasty value would greatly increase.

San Francisco 49ers QB Sam Darnold is set to be named the team's No. 2 quarterback and the Niners will explore their options with QB Trey Lance, per sources on Wednesday, Aug. 23.
Huddle Up: While Darnold has played fairly well during training camp and the preseason, this remains a stunning turn of events in San Fran and comes just a few years after the Niners traded the farm to move up for Lance, who has just eight games and four starts under his belt in the NFL. Darnold is now just an injury to Brock Purdy away from getting another chance but even then he'd have to prove he's vastly improved before being a candidate for lineups. As for Lance, the Niners will certainly explore trading him but don't figure to get much of a return after he just lost out on the backup job to Darnold. Lance's value is, at best, hanging by a thread in dynasty formats.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance has made a "substantial jump" as a passer, according to his private quarterbacks coach, Jeff Christensen.
Huddle Up: Lance remains an unknown as a starter thanks to last year's foot injury, but he still possesses all the physical tools that made him a high-upside QB2 entering the 2022 campaign. Brock Purdy figures to be the Week 1 starter if healthy, but if Lance is given the chance to start at any point in 2023, he will be worth scooping up in all formats.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance has not been the subject of substantial trade talks with other teams over the last few days and is not expected to be traded during the 2023 NFL Draft.
Huddle Up: Lance is expected to compete for the starting job during training camp but will enter as the underdog after Brock Purdy's success in 2022. He can be avoided in fantasy leagues if he does not start for a team next season.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance is expected to remain on the roster for the 2023 season, according to comments from general manager John Lynch on Monday, April 24. Lynch suggested that it "has not been extremely active" when he was asked about the phone calls he has received for Lance and characterized the reports of outside interest as "a lot of smoke."
Huddle Up: Brock Purdy's recovery from elbow surgery is reportedly going well, which naturally lends itself to the possibility San Francisco moves on from Lance. With that said, Lance is likely to get more reps during the offseason than Purdy and has plenty of time to make his case for a starting job, especially if Purdy encounters a setback while strengthening his arm this summer. Much like the Jimmy Garoppolo story played out last season, the 49ers may need Lance more than anyone expects in 2023.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance has been the subject of trade conversations initiated by other teams, according to sources.
Huddle Up: Ian Rapoport went as far as to tweet that teams are aware that Brock Purdy is likely the future starter. What a difference a few months make. Lance is unlikely to be dealt for now and will have to put on a show to reclaim a hold on the starting spot. He'll be a low-end QB1/high-end QB2 option with a lot of risk/reward this year.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance is expected to share first-team reps with Sam Darnold this offseason while Brock Purdy recovers from elbow surgery, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Per Shanahan, Lance has "a chance" to regain the starting job, but it will be harder for him to do so than it was at the start of last season. "I think it's going to be harder for him to (win the starting QB job). Brock played eight games. Trey had that job going into last season and if he would've played eight games like that, no one else would've been able to come in and beat him out. But with Brock being hurt, it does open him up. It does give him a chance. .. I don't know how Brock's going to come back. I don't know exactly when he's going to come back. So, I don't have an exact answer for that. But right now, because he is hurt, it's nice to focus on Trey, it's nice to focus on Sam and see how they do at OTAs and - most likely - see how they're playing leading into training camp because I think it will take some time for Brock," Shanahan told reporters at the league's annual meeting.
Huddle Up: With all due respect to Purdy, Lance was a player that Shanahan and general manager John Lynch thought enough of in 2021 to give up a future first- and third-round pick in addition to their 12th overall pick to move up nine spots. Lance has not enjoyed the best injury luck since entering the league, but he possesses enough dual-threat talent to make Shanahan's offense a juggernaut if he can avoid another setback. If Lance balls out this preseason, he stands a very good chance of getting his job back.

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance (ankle) is making progress, has begun a throwing program and is expected to be ready for organized team activities in May, general manager John Lynch said on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
Huddle Up: Lance's progress becomes even more important now that Brock Purdy's status for the start of the season is in doubt after he had to delay his surgery to repair a UCL injury. Of course, Purdy and Lance are expected to compete for the starting job if both are healthy, with Purdy figuring to have the inside track after helping the Niners to the NFC title game. Lance should be rostered in dynasty formats but is nothing more than a late-round flyer in season-long drafts if he wins the starting job after not showing much in his limited action in 2022.
