Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) posted a video to social media throwing just three months after surgery to repair torn cruciate and lateral cruciate ligaments. "He's going great," head coach Andy Reid said. "He spends a ton of time in the building. He's in there for seven to three hours a day. It's showing, the progress. Now, to tell you a timeline? I mean, I know what he's striving for. We'll just see where it goes from there."
Huddle Up: Mahomes is trying to return for the regular-season opener, but it remains to be seen if that's realistic, and whether the team wants to play it safe. Justin Fields was brought in as insurance, in case Mahomes isn't ready for the start of the season. Mahomes is a very risky fantasy pick in 2026, but as a selection in the middle to late rounds, he is worth a roll of the dice. Just make sure to have another alternative at the ready until Mahomes is starting on a regular basis without any issues.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) has been working with an athletic trainer for the past two months, as he recovers from surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. He is already showing progress. "He's around here all the time," head coach Andy Reid said Friday, Feb. 20. "He spends a ton of time here, seven hours a day. He's in there cranking away and making progress every day. It's great to see."
Huddle Up: Mahomes suffered his injuries late in the regular season, so it's reasonable to believe he'll miss time going into 2026. However, all indications are there he is pushing for a Week 1 return. He could be a low-end QB1 on draft day in most fantasy leagues, but you'll want to have plenty of depth on hand just in case he is forced to the PUP to being 2026.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes restructured his contract Wednesday, Feb. 18, to convert $54.45 million of his 2026 salary into a signing bonus, lowering his salary cap number from $78.2 to $34.65 million for the upcoming season and creating $43.56 million in salary cap space.
Huddle Up: Mahomes' salary cap number in each of the next four seasons will now rise by $10.89 million per year. His cap number for 2027 will now be over $85 million. They will eventually have to sign him to a new deal to make this manageable. All else has been mum as Mahomes recovers from a torn ACL and LCL and eyes a Week 1 return. He'll be a midrange QB1 that could slip into the QB8-10 range in drafts for the first time in his career.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) said the rehab from his torn anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament is going great and that his goal is to be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season.
Huddle Up: Mahomes is unlikely to do anything during offseason workouts, so fantasy players will need to check on his status during training camp to see if he will be ready for the start of the regular season. He will likely be a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 quarterback in leagues next season.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) has begun rehabbing from surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in his left knee. The team is hopeful he could return early next season, possibly by Week 1.
Huddle Up: It's pretty uncommon to undergo surgery so soon to repair an ACL as you usually have to allow swelling to subside first. So you can tell Mahomes' mind is set on Week 1. Whether or not that is possible is still unknown. He'll be a midrange QB1 option in next year's drafts with some risk. As for the rest of this season, Gardner Minshew will be a matchup play in two-QB leagues or superflex leagues. The Tennessee Titans are the second-best matchup for QBs the last five weeks.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Dec. 17.
Huddle Up: Gardner Minshew will take over the starting job for the rest of the season. He has had success in past seasons and can be a possible option in some two-quarterback leagues this week.

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) also had a torn lateral collateral ligament, in addition to the anterior cruciate ligament. Both of the ligaments were repaired during surgery.
Huddle Up: Recovery time is typically nine months for the ACL alone. It's very possible Mahomes misses the beginning of next season, but knowing his demeanor, he's going to do all he can to be back in time for the start. He'll be a mid-to-low-end QB1 in next year's drafts. Gardner Minshew takes over the rest of this season, and he's only a two-QB or superflex league option at this point. He'll be a consideration this week against the Tennessee Titans.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) successfully underwent surgery in Dallas on Monday, Dec. 15 to repair the tear in his left anterior cruciate ligament. He is expected to begin the rehab process immediately.
Huddle Up: According to most reports, the general rehab time for a torn ACL is nine months, which would put the return for Mahomes perilously close to the regular-season opener. It's going to be touch-and-go all summer with Mahomes news on how his rehab is going, who might start if he isn't ready for the season opener, etc. Gardner Minshew II will start the rest of the regular season under center in Kansas City with Mahomes on the shelf.

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) had an MRI which showed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee late in the Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes and the team are exploring surgical options. QB Gardner Minshew is expected to take over the starting quarterback to finish the season.
Huddle Up: The news goes from bad to worse for the Chiefs, who were eliminated from the playoffs, and now this. The timetable for Mahomes' return is uncertain, but it's likely training camp and preseason will be unlikely, and the start of the 2026 season could also be in danger for Mahomes, since this injury occurred so late in the season.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) left the Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers late in the fourth quarter after suffering a left knee injury. Head coach Andy Reid said Mahomes would have an MRI Sunday or Monday, and that the play "didn't look good" when Mahomes went down. He limped off to the sidelines with help, and he was seen on the telecast being helped to the locker room in the tunnel. Mahomes finished with 189 yards and no passing touchdowns, while running for a score. QB Gardner Minshew II finished up.
Huddle Up: Mahomes entered the game with a knee issue, so it's uncertain if he aggravated his existing injury, or if he suffered another. But, the Chiefs were stunningly eliminated from playoff contention, so it's very possible we've seen the last of Mahomes for 2025, although that's pure speculation. Minshew would start if Mahomes is held out as a precaution.
