Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jonnu Smith is expected to log snaps at tight end, slot receiver and as a fullback following his trade from the Miami Dolphins on Monday, June 30, according to sources.
Huddle Up: As a point of reference, Smith lined up 29 times in the backfield, 274 times as an inline tight end and 268 times in the slot with the Dolphins last season. While the news is presumably good for Smith in terms of how many snaps he will see in 2025, it is hard to imagine a scenario in which this trade increases his fantasy value. Smith's arrival also figures to render Pat Freiermuth almost useless from a fantasy perspective as well. Fantasy managers should treat both players as no more than middling TE2s now.

Updating an earlier report, Miami Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey, TE Jonnu Smith and 2027 seventh-round pick were acquired by the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for S Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.
Huddle Up: Smith loses some fantasy luster as he'll be playing alongside Pat Freiermuth, but he should still be involved in the offense. It just won't be to the 88-884-8 level it was last year. He'll be a midrange TE2 option after the upside rookies go.

Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith posted 582 yards during the second half of the 2024 NFL season and caught seven of his eight touchdowns during those games.
Huddle Up: Smith was one of the main options in the passing game for the Dolphins last season, but his status with the team is uncertain because he is looking for a new contract. He has been linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason but can be a No. 1 tight end in most leagues if he remains with the Dolphins.

Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith's contract situation is still a fluid, ongoing process, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus.
Huddle Up: Smith is coming off a career year with an 88-884-8 stat line at the age of 29. He's probably going to regress a bit, and there's uncertainty about where he'll be. So if you can get him as a TE2, that's the best scenario. Otherwise, you'll need an upside TE2 for the low-end TE1.

Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith has been excused from the mandatory minicamp and has received permission to seek a trade, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Huddle Up: Smith has been linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, but other teams like will have interest if he is available. He is coming off a terrific 2024 season and could be a low-end No. 1 fantasy tight end depending on his situation.

Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith is not at the team's minicamp Tuesday, June 10.
Huddle Up: Smith is among all sorts of trade rumors after having his best season at the age of 29. He's a bust candidate for 2025 considering his 88-884-8 statline was more than his previous two seasons combined. Look for him as a low-end TE1, but you'll need an upside TE2.

Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith was the subject of conversations with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but they're not expected to trade for him.
Huddle Up: Smith had his best year at the age of 29 with a 88-884-8 campaign. Miami could be looking to sell high on that with regression certainly possible. He's a tricky fantasy option but will be a low-end TE1. Just make sure you get an upside TE2 if the regression occurs as his previous career high was 582 yards.
