Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith will not have any competition for the starting job next season, and QB Sam Howell knows he will be the backup, according to head coach Mike Macdonald.
Huddle Up: Smith will have to learn a new offense this offseason but still has one of the better receiver groups in the NFL. He probably should be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback in most fantasy leagues and will not be in the starting lineup often.

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith is not a lock to start in 2024 based on recent comments by head coach Mike Macdonald during a radio interview on Friday, March 8.
Huddle Up: Smith came back down to earth in 2024 but his overall numbers weren't terrible, with the Seahawks signal-caller finishing as QB18 overall despite missing two games due to injury. Smith has a massive dead-cap number this year and cutting him wouldn't net any savings, so it looks like he'll be on the roster no matter what, barring a trade. As far as competition is concerned, the Seahawks don't have any on the roster and Smith's stiffest competition might come from a rookie if Seattle drafts a quarterback. The veteran would be considered the favorite to start in that situation and if he wins, Smith will enter 2024 as a QB2.

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith "is the quarterback until he's not," according to general manager John Schneider.
Huddle Up: Smith was the QB17 in 15 games last year. The team has the 16th overall selection and no second-round picks. So it'll be interesting to see if they try to land a quarterback in the middle of the first round or trade up. Smith is a decent QB2 "until he's not."

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith was hurried on 63 of his pass attempts this past season, which led the NFL in that category.

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith threw for 1,115 yards on play action passes this past season.

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith was informed by the team on Thursday, Feb. 15, that he will remain on the roster through this week, according to sources. As a result, the $12.7 million in his contract that was protected by an injury guarantee will become fully guaranteed on Friday.
Huddle Up: Smith took a step back from his breakout 2022 season last year, but some of that had to do with an offense under former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron that probably ran a bit more than it should have. It also would not make much sense for Seattle to move on from Smith since the team does not have a viable alternative already in place and cutting him would have resulted in a dead cap charge of around $17.5 million. While he may not repeat 2022, Smith could rebound nicely if new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb employs a more pass-heavy approach as expected.

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith (groin) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 22, and is not on the injury report for Week 16.
Huddle Up: Smith will return to the lineup after a one-game absence and should not have any limitations. He should be a starting option in two-quarterback leagues and could be a possible option in some deeper standard leagues.
