Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (knee) underwent surgery on his torn meniscus on Wednesday, Aug. 14, and will miss the 2024 season, per sources.
Huddle Up: This is obviously a terrible start to McCarthy's career and a tough blow for the Vikings after taking him with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. This will now push McCarthy's development back a year and leaves Sam Darnold as the unquestioned starter moving forward. However, Darnold can't be trusted in any format.

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (knee) will undergo surgery due to a torn meniscus in his right knee. The determination as to whether it's a full repair or a cleanup will take place during the operation.
Huddle Up: Either way, Sam Darnold is your starting quarterback in Minnesota. If it's a meniscus cleanup, he could only miss two-to-four weeks. If it's a full repair, you're looking at missing at least the first half of the year. McCarthy's fantasy stock takes a hit in single-year leagues, and Darnold's luster increases slightly. But, unless you're in a two-QB league, you're going to need a really good matchup to use him.

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy is a longshot to be the starter at the beginning of the season, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN on Sunday, July 21. "He is not the starter as of now, Sam Darnold is considered the heavy favorite. My sense is McCarthy would have to be absolutely all-world in the next six weeks to win this job," Fowler said.
Huddle Up: McCarthy will eventually get his chance during his rookie season, potentially after the team's Week 6 bye. He's a waiver-wire target with potential QB2 value whenever he does get the start.

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy signed his four-year rookie contract, according to sources Friday, July 19. The deal is worth $21.85 fully guaranteed and includes a $12.71 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option.
Huddle Up: McCarthy is battling for the QB1 role with Sam Darnold but eventually should take over as the starter during his rookie season. Managers should temper expectations, but McCarthy could be a viable streaming option in weeks with a favorable matchup.
