New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr officially announced his retirement from the NFL Saturday, May 10, according to a press release from the team.
Huddle Up: Carr had been in jeopardy of missing the upcoming season after experiencing pain in his right shoulder while throwing in late March, on the heels of having had his 2024 campaign cut short due to a concussion and left hand injury. Eventually, it was revealed that Carr had a torn labrum and had significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff. Surgery had been under consideration but there was no guarantee that the 34-year-old veteran would have been the same caliber of player if he had chosen to continue his career. QBs Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener and rookie Tyler Shough will battle for the Saints' starting job but none of these options should be considered as anything more than low-end QB2 options in deeper fantasy leagues at this point.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (shoulder) reportedly wants to try to play through the shoulder injury he believes he suffered in Week 14 of last season, according to NFL Network's Jane Slater. Per Slater, Carr has met with the team doctor twice in recent weeks and did not know the shoulder was hurt before because he only resumed throwing a football a few weeks ago as he began to ramp up for offseason work.
Huddle Up: Slater adds that surgery remains on the table, but it is something Carr wants to avoid since he has already had surgery on the same shoulder. Fantasy managers can expect another update or two over the next couple of weeks, but it appears a decision - either by the team or Carr - is coming shortly.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (shoulder) said he has undergone an MRI on his injured shoulder and has been in consistent contact with team about the situation.
Huddle Up: Carr's availability for 2025 is still uncertain at this point, so fantasy players will need to monitor the situation over the next few months. Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener are all candidates to start if Carr is not available, but none are more than No. 2 fantasy QBs.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (shoulder) is expected to receive clarity on his shoulder injury in the near future, according to general manager Mickey Loomis.
Huddle Up: Carr is in jeopardy of missing the entire 2025 season if he needs surgery, so fantasy players will need to monitor the situation over the next several weeks. Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener likely will compete for the starting job if the Saints do not bring in another quarterback, but neither is more than a No. 2 fantasy QB.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (shoulder) is dealing with a shoulder injury, and his availability for the 2025 is uncertain at this point, according to sources. He is considering multiple options including surgery.
Huddle Up: Fantasy players will need to monitor the situation to see if Carr has a chance to play in 2025. It seems more likely that the Saints will select an early in the draft and that rookie probably would compete with Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener for the starting job if Carr is not available. Fantasy players should consider the Saints quarterback as a No. 2 QB option.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr agreed to a restructured contract that saves the team roughly $30 million in salary-cap space, according to sources Saturday, March 8.
Huddle Up: This move signals that Carr will be with the team for at least the 2025 season. Even with the impressive mind of new head coach Kellen Moore, fantasy managers should view Carr as a low-end QB2 option.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr is expected to remain with the team under new head coach Kellen Moore, according to sources Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Huddle Up: Carr finished the 2024 season averaging 15.1 fantasy points per game while missing seven contests due to injury. The addition of Moore is intriguing, but Carr is best viewed as a mid-QB2 option with limited upside.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr has $10 million guaranteed for 2025 with another $30 million scheduled to kick in March 15. His release would only save his cap-strapped team a couple of million dollars and the team is unlikely to be in a position to draft a blue-chip quarterback, which makes it likely that Carr will remain the starting quarterback for at least one more season.
Huddle Up: This comes as little surprise for most NFL fans, as the Saints enter the offseason about $60 million over the salary cap and are in no position to part with a capable quarterback with so many other needs on the roster. The best thing new head coach Kellen Moore and the front office can do for Carr right now is continue to add quality pieces to an offensive line that has fallen off dramatically since the end of the Sean Payton era. Carr should be considered no more than a middling QB2 option in fantasy in 2025.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr is likely to open the 2025 season as the starter because the team would only save a couple of million dollars if they cut him. He has $10 million guaranteed for 2025 with another $30 million scheduled to kick in March 15.
Huddle Up: Carr will be a QB2 option universally. He's not the worst option in fantasy, but the problem is that the team is strapped financially and can't afford to add much around him outside of the draft.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr likely will receive interest from a few teams this offseason if the Saints decide to release him, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Huddle Up: The Saints are expected to hire Kellen Moore as their new head coach, so it is not known if Carr will be playing for the Saints or another team next season. He was limited to 10 games this season and finished with 2,145 yards and 15 touchdowns. He should be a starting quarterback for a team in 2025 but will be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback.
